Odisha Palm Pattachitra

Meet the talented Maharana brothers, Pramod Kumar Maharana (36 yrs) and Prakash Kumar Maharana (33 yrs), hailing from Nayaka Patana village in Odisha’s Puri district. Born into a family of renowned chitrakars, they excel in the ancient art forms of Pattachitra and Silk Painting. Guided by their father and trained by master artists Jaganath and Dinabandhu Mahapatra, the Maharana brothers have showcased their craftsmanship across Europe, particularly in Germany. Prafulla Kr. Maharana, a recipient of the State Handicrafts award (1998) and Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhawna Award (2007), has been recognized with the Certificate of Merit 2006 by the Ministry of Textile. Infusing contemporary elements into their work, they have expanded the traditional practice of Pattachitra beyond palm leaf scrolls to encompass wall hangers, bookmarks, and even game boards. Notably, Pramod earns a monthly income of Rs 10,000 from sales of his artwork at a Chennai museum.

Here’s some of their work!
